5 Ways to Live a Non-Toxic Lifestyle

In today's world, where we're constantly surrounded by chemicals and artificial substances, switching to a non-toxic lifestyle is not just a choice; it's a necessity for our health and well-being. It's about creating a safe, healthy environment for ourselves and our families!

1. Start with Your Home

Your home should be your sanctuary, free from harmful chemicals! There are SO MANY things you can swap in your home for nontoxic options. An easy place to begin is replacing your regular cleaning products with natural alternatives. Look for products with organic ingredients or make your own cleaning solutions using items like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. Not only are they effective, but they also eliminate the exposure to toxic chemicals found in many commercial cleaners.

One of the best ways to start the journey toward a healthier lifestyle in your home in a financially responsible way is to condense your products. Find "clean," nontoxic products that serve a variety of purposes!

One of my FAVORITE cleaners is Force of Nature. The starter pack comes with a bottle and an appliance that converts tap water and capsules with salt, water, and vinegar into a multi-purpose cleaner, deodorizer, EPA registered sanitizer and hospital-grade disinfectant. It's completely safe around children and pets! This takes the place of SO many things in my home. I use it to clean my kitchen and bathroom, wipe down high chairs, disinfect (like for kids' toys!), and put it in my Tineco vacuum!

2. Mindful Grocery Shopping

Shopping locally for groceries offers a TON of benefits, particularly when it comes to maintaining a diet free from harmful toxins. Local produce is typically fresher, has traveled shorter distances, and is less likely to be heavily treated with pesticides or preservatives compared to items shipped from far away.

Of course, we get a ton of grocery items from our local farmers during the season. I've found that local farmers often employ more sustainable and organic farming methods, which are better for the environment and our family's health. I also love the fact that I am directly contributing to the community around me and building relationships with small businesses!

When you do shop at the grocery store, be mindful of ingredients. One tip I've heard is to stay on the outside aisles. This leads you to areas like fresh produce, dairy, meat, eggs, frozen produce, and meat. The inner aisles are more likely to have packaged, processed, and not-so-great-for-you items. The less processed, the better! Also, be mindful of plastic packaging and bring reusable grocery bags!

3. Skincare and Personal Care Products

Switching to non-toxic and organic skincare products is crucial to safeguarding your health! The skin, being the body's largest organ, absorbs a significant portion of the substances applied to it, including the harmful chemicals found in many conventional skincare products. These can include parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and other toxins that may disrupt hormonal balance, cause skin irritation, or contribute to long-term health issues (like cancer- ugh!). On the other hand, organic skincare products are made from natural ingredients that are safe for your skin and environmentally friendly. They are typically free from harsh chemicals, relying instead on natural botanicals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin.

4. Non-toxic Fashion & Linens

Transitioning to non-toxic clothing and home textiles is also a great step toward a healthier lifestyle for you and your family. Opting for garments and linens made from natural fibers like organic cotton, bamboo, and hemp ensures that your skin, your body's largest organ, is not exposed to the harmful chemicals often used in conventional fabric production, such as synthetic pesticides and dyes. These chemicals can cause skin irritations, allergies, and even more severe health issues over time.

Choosing organic and natural fibers is particularly crucial for babies and children, whose skin is more sensitive and more permeable than adult skin. Similarly, replacing everyday items like towels and bed sheets with organic options can drastically reduce your family’s daily exposure to toxins, enhancing the quality of your sleep and overall well-being. Not only do these materials FEEL better against the skin, but they are also better FOR you.

Most of the linens for our bedroom are from SIJO, and we LOVE THEM! When shopping for clothes for Addy and Dax, I opt for 100% organic cotton or bamboo. Not only are they organic and non-toxic, but they are also super soft for their skin!

5. Clean Air and Water

Investing in high-quality water filters and air purifiers for your home is essential for maintaining a healthy living environment. Water filters ensure that your drinking water is free from contaminants such as chlorine, heavy metals, and other potentially harmful chemicals, which can affect your health over time. Clean, filtered water not only tastes better, WAY better, but also protects your body from the harmful effects of all the impurities! We use this ProOne filter in our house. It's a 2-tank stainless steel gravity filtration system that passes the water through ceramic filters to purify the water into the bottom tank.

Similarly, a high-quality air purifier plays a crucial role in maintaining clean indoor air, which is especially important given that indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air! Air purifiers help remove pollutants such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), common in household cleaning products and furnishings. By removing these contaminants, air purifiers help prevent respiratory problems, allergies, and other health issues. We use this air filter in our home and love it!

Together, a water filtration system and an efficient air purifier enhance your household's overall health, comfort, and well-being. They are wise investments for anyone looking to lead a cleaner, healthier life. The cost may be hefty upfront, but they are well worth your investment in the long run.

Conclusion

Hopefully, I've encouraged you to start adjusting your daily life today to journey into a more nontoxic lifestyle. As I mentioned above, start small by making manageable changes at home, updating your grocery choices, switching to natural skincare products, and opting for organic clothing and linens. Investing in high-quality water and air filters also ensures cleaner, safer, and better breathing environments. Though seemingly small, each step contributes profoundly to your and your family's well-being! Good luck swapping!

Always,

Jess
