Love Yourself First: A Mom's Guide to Valentine’s Day Self-Care

Happy Valentine’s Day, moms! Amid the hustle of arranging class cards, baking treats, and managing family schedules (all while it's most likely still freezing outside!), it's crucial not to forget the most important person—you!

Self-care isn't just a buzzword - it’s an essential practice that keeps us thriving. Remember, to give love fully, you need to feel loved, and that starts with loving yourself! I know it sounds cliche, but it really is true. Because of that, I want to chat about what self-care might look like for you because it’s not one-size-fits-all. Whether it’s quiet reading time, a jog in the park, or a creative endeavor, find what truly rejuvenates your spirit. I promise, you not only need it but you fully deserve it!

Discovering Your Self-Care

Determining what truly counts as self-care for you can sometimes feel like a daunting task, especially when you're bombarded with generic ideas that might not resonate with your personal needs. The key to uncovering what genuinely rejuvenates you is to reflect on moments in your day or week when you feel most at peace or energized.

Start by asking yourself what activities help you unwind after a stressful day or what hobbies you look forward to the most. Is it the quiet hour with a book, a solo jog in the early morning, or perhaps creating something with your hands?

If you've always wanted to try out something, use this as an opportunity to try it out! A quick Google search will give you a ton of ideas - pottery painting, crocheting, knitting, puzzles, painting, drawing, writing, etc.

To make this exploration practical, keep a small journal for a week or two. Note down activities you do daily and how you feel after each one. Look for patterns—activities that consistently leave you happier, more relaxed, or invigorated are your personal self-care activities. Don’t limit yourself to conventional ideas; sometimes, self-care is tidying up space in your home, gardening, or even solving puzzles. Experiment with new activities, too. Attend a yoga class, try out painting, or go for a nature walk. Pay attention to how these experiences affect your mood and stress levels.

Remember, self-care is deeply personal. It's about listening to your body and mind and honoring what they need. Once you start to understand your responses to different activities, scheduling 'me time' will not just be another chore but a cherished part of your routine that truly enhances your well-being.

Examples of Ways to Embrace Self-Care This Valentine's Season

Valentine's Day offers the perfect excuse to step up your self-care routine and incorporate special treats that make you feel particularly cherished. Here are just some examples to get you started:

  • Coffee Date: Plan a kid-free coffee date with another mom. Choose a cozy café and spend a few hours chatting away without any interruptions. No packing of the diaper bag, unloading & loading of kids, constant snacks, wiping hands & mouths. For a little bit, you get to just be a friend! It’s a great way to unwind and connect with someone who understands the joys and challenges of motherhood.

  • Spa Day Luxury: Book a day at a spa. Whether it’s a massage, a facial, or a full spa day, the relaxation you’ll experience is unbeatable. If a spa visit isn’t feasible, create a spa-like atmosphere at home with essential oils, a warm bath, and your favorite face mask. Make sure your kids are cared for and lock that door for an escape from motherhood duties - even if just for an hour!

  • Manicure or Pedicure: Sometimes, a little pampering can go a long way. A trip to get your nails done can lift your spirits and make you feel polished and put together. This can be a solo trip or an experience with another mom/friend who needs some time out as well.

  • Shopping: Sometimes you just need a good shopping trip or online shopping time! Set a budget that works for you and get what you want! It could be something you've been eyeing for a while but never jumped on it. Or it could be something you just saw yesterday! • Solo Staycation: If possible, a night alone in a local hotel can do wonders. You don't even have to go far! It’s a luxury of solitude where you can sleep in, watch TV, order room service, and wake up on your own schedule. If you've never thought of this, try it out. It might be the refreshing time alone that you need!

  • Movie Night with Friends: Gather your friends for a movie night. Choose a movie that makes you laugh, think, or feel inspired. Combine it with your favorite snacks, cozy blankets, and the best drinks for a perfect night in.

  • Indulgent Dinner at Home: Not up for going out? Have an indulgent meal at home. Pick up your favorite foods—whether that’s a gourmet pizza or ingredients for a fancy home-cooked meal. Make it special by setting the table, playing some music, and treating yourself to your favorite dessert. You can absolutely order your favorite meal so that you can fully enjoy it without dirtying the kitchen or needing to cook yourself.

Closing Thoughts: Prioritize Yourself

This Valentine's Day, make a promise to yourself to prioritize your well-being. Embrace the forms of self-care that resonate most with you, and remember that taking time for yourself isn't selfish—it's necessary. Your family benefits when you're at your best, and self-care is a critical part of that. So here’s to love, especially the love you give yourself. Enjoy your self-care time, however you choose to spend it—you deserve every moment of it!

Xo,

Jess
