The Ultimate Guide to Holiday Hosting

The holiday season is upon us!! For many, it’s a time of joy, celebration, and, let’s be honest, a little bit of stress.

If you’re hosting a holiday gathering, it can be all too easy to get swept up in the whirlwind of perfectionism and overcomplicating things - I say incredibly unjudgementally because SAME! But guess what? It’s entirely possible to host a fantastic, memorable event without driving yourself up the wall. The key lies in simplifying the process and focusing on what truly matters: enjoying the time spent with your loved ones.

So, let’s ditch the unrealistic expectations of a flawless party and embrace a more laid-back approach. This blog post will help you streamline your holiday hosting with ease and grace.

1. Plan Ahead

When it comes to hosting, planning is your best friend. Planning ahead is absolutely key when it comes to hosting a memorable holiday party. Ideally, you should start the planning process about four to six weeks in advance. This gives you ample time to handle all the details without feeling rushed. Begin by setting a date and deciding on a theme, if you desire one, which can guide your decorations, menu, and activities.

Create a detailed to-do list that covers several categories:

1. Guest List and Invitations: Determine who you’ll invite and send out invitations early. Digital invitations can be a great option for keeping track of RSVPs effortlessly.

2. Menu Planning: Decide whether you’ll be doing all the cooking, ordering catering, or hosting a potluck. Plan your menu according to the theme and make sure to consider guests' dietary restrictions.

3. Decorations: Depending on your theme, start gathering or purchasing decorations. Don’t forget about ambient lighting and music, as these can transform your space.

4. Shopping List: Compile a shopping list early. Break it down into perishables, which you'll buy a few days before the event, and non-perishables, which can be bought ahead of time.

5. Setup and Flow: Sketch out the party layout. Think about where food and drinks will be set up to allow for easy flow and interaction among guests.

Another helpful tip is to break down tasks into manageable chunks by making separate lists for two weeks out, one week out, and the day of the event.

Your two-week-out list might include tasks like gathering any decorations or plates, utensils, etc, while the one-week-out list could focus on shopping for groceries and confirming RSVPs. On the day of the party, your list might be a bit more granular—things like setting the table, cleaning the house, prepping food, etc.

By spreading out tasks over time, you’ll avoid last-minute panic and feel more in control. And who doesn’t love the satisfaction of checking off items from a list?!

By methodically addressing each of these areas well in advance, you’ll ensure that your holiday party is not only festive and fun but also smooth and stress-free. You'll be able to enjoy the evening as much as your guests do!

2. Declutter and Clean

Before the guests arrive for your holiday party, taking the time to clean and declutter your space is crucial. Start by focusing on high-traffic areas like the living room, kitchen, and bathrooms. Ensure these spaces are not only tidy but also welcoming! Spruce them up with seasonal decorations if you want! Remove any items that don’t serve a purpose or make the space feel cramped. This creates a more comfortable environment and opens up valuable space for your guests.

About a week before the event, do a thorough cleaning—vacuum and mop floors, dust surfaces, and clean windows to make the whole house sparkle. Focus on the areas where guests will be, like the living room, dining area, and bathroom. There’s no need to deep-clean every nook and cranny (if you don't want to)—just make sure the spaces that matter are looking fresh and tidy!

A day or two before your guests arrive, declutter countertops, coffee tables, and other surfaces to make room for food, drinks, and decorations. It’s also a good idea to create a designated space for guests’ coats and bags—clear out a closet or set up a room for personal items.

Lastly, ensure your bathroom is guest-ready with fresh hand towels, toilet paper, and a stock of essentials like hand soap and lotion. These efforts will not only make your home look great but also make it more functional and comfortable for everyone to enjoy the festivities.

Remember, you don’t have to aim for perfection. A little effort goes a long way in creating a welcoming atmosphere.

3. Take a Look Around

Simplifying the process of hosting a holiday party doesn't mean you have to skimp on style or fun - I promise! A great way to ease the stress and cut costs is by utilizing what you already have in your home. Take a moment to survey your home and see what items you can repurpose.

For instance, instead of buying new decorations, re-purpose and rearrange items you already possess. Those string lights from summer evenings can twinkle beautifully along a mantle or around a doorway, adding festive warmth. For table settings, mix and match glassware, plates, and utensils you already own to create an eclectic, charming vibe.

If you need a centerpiece, consider crafting one from books, candles, and seasonal foliage from your backyard. Also, think about using your TV or a digital picture frame to display a slideshow of holiday photos from previous years. Not only does using what you have save money and time, it also adds a personal touch that store-bought items can't match, making your party feel cozy and inviting.

There’s no need to rush out and buy new decorations or servingware. Instead, get creative with what you’ve got. You might be surprised at how a few tweaks can give your space a festive makeover!

4. Plan Food in Advance

Food is often a major source of stress during holiday gatherings, but it doesn’t have to be. When planning food for your holiday party, the key is to keep the menu manageable while still delivering delightful dishes that your guests will love. Start by deciding on a theme or cuisine type to streamline your menu planning—perhaps a traditional holiday feast, finger foods, or a dessert party. Opt for recipes that can be made ahead of time and are easy to serve, such as casseroles, cold appetizers, or slow-cooker dishes that keep warm throughout the evening.

To further simplify your preparation, consider designating parts of the meal for guests to contribute. For instance, if you're handling the main dish and a couple of sides, ask guests to bring their favorite salads, appetizers, or desserts. This not only lightens your workload but also adds variety to the table. Be sure to coordinate these contributions to avoid duplicates and ensure a well-rounded meal.

By planning ahead and thoughtfully, you’ll ensure that everything is ready when guests arrive, and you’ll have more time to enjoy their company.

5. Clean Up Efficiently

Streamlining the cleanup process during and after your holiday party can make the whole experience more enjoyable and less daunting. One of the best ways to keep cleanup manageable is to stay ahead of the mess. Start by emptying your dishwasher before the party begins so you have a place to quickly load dirty dishes as they accumulate. If your dishwasher fills up, create a soaking bin by filling a side of your sink or a separate bin with warm, soapy water. This will help keep dirty dishes from piling up and makes washing up easier by preventing food from drying.

Another effective strategy is to clean as you go. Keep a supply of cleaning materials handy—like disposable wipes and trash bags—so you can quickly deal with spills or messes as they occur.

Make sure garbage cans are easily accessible and visible, especially if you’re using disposable utensils or plates. Guests will appreciate the convenience of being able to dispose of their trash without having to hunt for a garbage can. Set up clearly labeled recycling bins and trash cans around the party area to encourage guests to dispose of their waste properly, minimizing the work for you later.

And don’t underestimate the power of tablecloths! They’re not only festive but also make cleanup a breeze. Simply remove the tablecloth, toss it in the wash, and you’re done.

You can also enlist a few close friends or family members to help tidy up gradually throughout the event, which can prevent the overwhelming pile-up at the end of the night.

BONUS TIP: Embrace the Moment

At the end of the day, remember that the holidays are all about spending time with the people who matter most to us. There might be a hiccup or two along the way, and that’s okay. The focus should be on enjoying the special moments with friends and family.

So take a deep breath, let go of the quest for perfection, and savor the holiday season. Your guests will appreciate the effort you put into making the event special, but they’ll value your company even more!

Here’s to a joyful, relaxed holiday season filled with love and laughter!

Xo,

Jess
