When the rainy season hits, and you still want to get outside, keeping kids dry is typically a top priority. But what if your other top priority is making sure your little ones are safe from harmful substances? Did you know that many conventional rain jackets, boots, and umbrellas contain toxic chemicals that could be harmful to your child’s health? If you're looking to buy some new gear this year and make better decisions for your family's health, keep reading!
Why do I Need "Nontoxic" Rain Gear?
Most waterproof gear is made with perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as "forever chemicals" because they don’t break down in the environment. Not only are they impossible words to read, but they are also impossible to degrade in the environment fully.
PFAS are often used in rain gear to create a water-repellent barrier, ensuring that water beads up and rolls off instead of soaking through. However, these chemicals don’t just stay on the fabric—they can leach into the environment and even enter the bloodstream through skin contact.
Other potentially harmful substances in rain gear include PVC (polyvinyl chloride), phthalates, and heavy metals, which can be found in rain boots, jackets/suits, and umbrellas. Exposure to these toxins has been linked to respiratory issues, endocrine disruption, hormone disruption, developmental issues, and even some cancers. AWFUL!
If this sounds scary, don't worry! There are options that are better and safer for your kids! I've done a lot of researching, digging, and testing of nontoxic rain gear to give you different options to consider.
What to Look for When Shopping

When shopping for nontoxic rain gear, look for materials labeled PFAS-free, PVC-free, and phthalate-free. Opt for products made with polyurethane, organic cotton, or recycled polyester with safer waterproof coatings. Natural rubber is also another good option when it comes to gear like rain boots.
Certifications like OEKO-TEX and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) can also help ensure that a product meets strict safety standards. Avoid gear that lists "Teflon," "fluoropolymer," or "PFC" in the description, as these are red flags for PFAS.
Nontoxic Rain Gear Options
Thankfully, more brands are stepping up to offer PFAS-free and nontoxic rain gear for kids. Companies like Stonz, Reima, Faire Child, and Frugi use safer alternatives such as polyurethane (PU) and organic waxed cotton to achieve water resistance without relying on harmful chemicals.

We have a Stonz rainsuit for Addy that is made from Nylon and Polyester with PU coating instead of other toxic chemicals. This is perfect for keeping their entire outfit dry while jumping in the mud and splashing in the puddles. It comes in a bunch of fun colors too!
Reima offers rain jackets, pants, and boots made with PU coating, which is free from PVC and fluorocarbons.
Faire Child creates eco-friendly rainwear from recycled polyester with a non-toxic waterproof membrane. All of their products are Oeko Tex certified and GOTS certified, to ensure there are no harmful chemicals in the materials.
I have personally bought rain boots for Addy from Woolly Kids, and they are awesome! Their shoes are not only barefoot-approved (check out this blog if you don't know what I'm talking about) but also made with natural rubber that is completely biodegradable in the environment and is free from any toxic substances. They also use organic cotton!
Another great option is these Ten Little Rain Boots, made with natural rubber and barefoot-approved.
Conclusion
By choosing nontoxic rain gear for your little ones, you’re not only protecting their health but also reducing the environmental impact of harmful chemicals. With safer alternatives now widely available, there’s no need to compromise on quality or durability. Rainy days can still be fun and worry-free when your child is dressed in gear that keeps them dry without compromising. Wishing you the most fun on those rainy days with your littles!

Jess
